When should I take newborn photos?

This question gets asked a lot and depending on who you ask, you will get a different answer.

Most people will tell you that you have to take newborn photos within the first two weeks of bub’s life. That’s when they are most sleepy and it’s easy to pose them without too much resistance.

My style of newborn photography gives a lot more flexibility than this though, and I usually recommend to take newborn photos within the first month.

Apart from bub’s sleepiness there are a lot of other factors that determine when it is best to take your newborn photos. How was your birth? How is your recovery going? Did you need a Caesarean and need more time to rest than anticipated? Do you still need time to adjust to life with a newborn at home and don’t feel like letting someone into your home yet? Every birth, recovery and postpartum journey is different and it’s important that it feels right for you to have your newborn session - without the stress of leaving it too late.

So if you want to get newborn photos taken but still want to leave it for a week or two, don’t stress! I take a lot of beautiful in-the-moment shots and capture bub in your arms and this can be done wether they are 4 days or 4 weeks old.

The only thing I would recommend though is booking in your session before bub arrives (don’t worry, you can pick the exact date later…). Because from experience I can tell you that booking a photographer is the last thing on your mind when you bring your little one home.
